High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, means the force of blood against your artery walls is consistently too high. Over time, this puts serious strain on your heart, kidneys, and blood vessels.
The danger is that most people feel completely fine. There are no obvious warning signs until real damage has already occurred.
Regular monitoring is the only reliable way to catch it early. A single five-minute check at Cootes Pharmacy could give you information that changes your long-term health.
A blood pressure reading gives you two numbers. The top number (systolic) measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. The bottom number (diastolic) measures the pressure between beats, when your heart is resting.
Both numbers matter. When either stays persistently elevated, the risk to your cardiovascular system increases significantly.
Ranges based on current NICE guidelines.
Our hypertension service is designed to identify high blood pressure early and connect you with the right support. A trained member of our team carries out a free, clinically validated blood pressure check at your appointment. We take the time to explain exactly what your results mean, in plain language.
We coordinate directly with your GP if results show any concerns, ensuring a seamless care pathway. Detailed 24-hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) is also available upon request at both pharmacy locations.
Under the updated April 2025 NHS eligibility criteria, the following patients qualify for a free blood pressure check at Cootes Pharmacy:
Adults 40+ without a prior high blood pressure diagnosis
Adults under 40 with a family history of hypertension (pharmacist's discretion)
Adults aged 35 to 39 (pharmacist's discretion)
Any adult referred by a GP for a check or ABPM
Hypertension is more likely in patients with one or more of the following risk factors. If more than one applies to you, a blood pressure check is strongly advisable.
Uncontrolled hypertension causes progressive damage that builds silently over years. Severe risks include stroke, heart failure, kidney disease, and vision loss. These outcomes are common results of neglecting high blood pressure over time.
Early detection makes a genuine difference. The earlier a raised reading is identified and acted on, the more of this damage can be prevented.
If your reading is 180/110 mmHg or above, call 999 or go to A&E immediately. Do not wait for a GP appointment or pharmacy visit.
Also seek emergency care immediately if you experience any of the following alongside a high reading: severe headache, blurred or sudden changes to vision, chest pain, sudden confusion, difficulty speaking, or facial drooping.
Please note: These are warning signs of a hypertensive crisis. They require emergency assessment, not a routine appointment.
Not all patients meet the NHS eligibility criteria, and some want more regular monitoring than the standard NHS pathway provides.
Cootes Pharmacy offers private hypertension consultations at both Finchley branches. These appointments are suitable for patients who want a more detailed cardiovascular health review, more frequent check-ins, or an assessment of any existing medication.

Louise CowanI visited this pharmacy to obtain a medication that is currently in national short supply. They assured me it was in stock with their supplier & would be ordered for next-day delivery and securely stored, but I would need to wait five minutes upon arrival while they prepared it. That was no problem for me, and I even explained that if there were any issues, they should call me, and I’d ask my GP to amend the prescription. A few days later, I went to collect the medication, only to be told they didn’t have it. There was no explanation—just a curt “no, we don’t have it.” I was puzzled and mentioned that the pharmacist had said it would be kept in a safe place. The dispenser then mocked me, saying, “we don’t have it; we know where we keep the meds,” with a sarcastic tone. Still, no explanation was given about what had happened. Eventually, the pharmacist said they could order it since it was in stock, and I could collect it the next day. They promised to call me when it arrived. Which they did and all was ok. The experience was disorganised and unnecessarily rude. There was no need for the sarcasm; a polite explanation and a clear solution would have sufficed. I mentioned this to a local friend who shared similar sentiments and now chooses to walk five minutes further to another pharmacy to avoid dealing with this one.
No. Both Finchley branches accept walk-in patients for blood pressure checks. You can also book in advance if you prefer a set time.
The check itself takes around five minutes. If your pharmacist wants to discuss your results or lifestyle factors, allow around ten to fifteen minutes in total.
Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring involves wearing a small device that measures your blood pressure at regular intervals throughout the day and night. It gives a more accurate reading than a single clinic measurement. Our team will explain what to expect and how to wear the monitor before you leave.
Our pharmacists can carry out a medication review as part of a private hypertension consultation. Any changes to prescribed medication are always made in liaison with your GP.
Avoid caffeine and exercise for at least 30 minutes before your appointment. Rest quietly for five minutes before the reading is taken. Wear loose clothing on your upper arm. Tell our pharmacist about any medications you are currently taking.
The check takes five minutes and is free for most adults over 40. Early detection makes a genuine difference.
